Norfolk Island "Gift" 2010

Taylah Menzies recorded her second straight win in last weekends Norfolk Island Gas Centre Gift. Her effort in winning the 100metres event topped off a great preparation for Taylah, being ably assisted by family support and coaching from Grandfather Yarm and Dad Dylan who is currently residing in Brisbane. Between Dylan and daughter Taylah they have notched up 5 wins over the years and there might yet be a third family member keen to have their name etched on the perpetual trophy – seems Yarm might yet be out training next year to give Taylah a run for her money. Watch this space!

The 100 metres is the blue-ribbon event in the annual “Gift” event and has been religiously supported by the Gas Centre for many years. Our grateful thanks to Chris and Karen Gatehouse for their ongoing support for this event and the encouragement they offer to athletes of all ages to participate in athletics.

The four heats in the 100metres had Taylah moving into the final with the fastest time despite a howling headwind impacting on times. The final was delayed until after the completion of the other programmed events but was worth the wait for the much anticipated show down between Taylah and the main contenders for the title, Mark Kalsrap(starting off 8.9metres) and Brad Griffiths ( off scratch). From the gun the spectators roar of support helped carry all athletes to faster times than their heats but Taylah’s determination prevailed ahead of a fast finishing Brad Griffiths in second place and tiring Mark Kalsrap in third.Marks effort was notable as he ran the final backing up from a win in the “Middlegate Mile” and a second placing in the “World Traders 400metres”. Holly Bigg was narrowly beaten into 4th spot with Jake Richards-Singer,Charlie Carr,Mareeva Evans and Heidi Bigg filling out the final eight.

One of the toughest track events, the “World Traders 400metres” attracted a field of 16 athletes, all placed around the track at their designated handicap positions. Holly Bigg , as the front marker and only a few metres ahead of the race sponsor,Ian Anderson, was not daunted by the talent packed field chasing her and scorched home to take this years title and a first prize of $250 ahead of a lightning fast finish from Mark Kalsrap and a very determined Heidi Bigg in third place.

The longest event on the programme, the “Middlegate Mile” proved to be a popular event with a number of competitors having recently competed in the Around the Island Relay two weeks ago as their warm up for this latest challenge.Unfortuneately past champion Trevor Calder was scratched from the event and without him as a clear favourite for back to back wins ,the field was wide open for trying to pick a winner. Richard Cribb was fancied as a title challenger after his second placing last year but Mark Kalsraps turn of speed in the 400metres gave every indication that this young man might have the makings of a very good middle distance runner. Charlie Carr and Eloise Grant led the runners off and maintained a healthy lead well into the race. Mark, starting almost a full minute behind began the chase maintaining an easy gait steadily picking up runners as he eyed a place on the podium. Charlie maintained her lead on the race into the final 100 metre straight, when Mark pounced and ran away with his first title win in a “Gift” event. Charlie finished a close second after a gallant fight to the tape with Richard Cribb crossing in third place.Last years young guns in this event, Mason Wilkinson(4th) and Dylan Menadue(7th),again featured in the top eight places along with Ethan Richards(5th), Eloise Grant(6th) and Jake Singer(8th).

Although cooler than last year and a whole lot windier the 2010 “Gift” again proved a hit with athletes of all ages.
